UH System Student Basic Needs Resource

This website serves as a resource to assist students who are in search of means to help them with meeting their basic needs such as food, housing and financial assistance.


Kuaʻana Tuition Waiver

Website: Kuaʻana Tuition Waiver Information

This need-based tuition waiver is available to undergraduate and classified graduate native Hawaiian students at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.  Applications are available each year online and the FAFSA is required.


Medical Student Emergency Support Fund

This fund is to assist students of JABSOM with unexpected financial hardships incurred while enrolled in school.  Funds may be used to cover expenses such as, but not limited to, unexpected medical expenses, travel costs, automobile and other unforeseen expenses.  To request an application, please send an email to medfas@hawaii.edu.


NHCOE Stipend

NHCOE offers stipends supporting Native Hawaiian (NH) JABSOM students to prepare for USMLE Steps 1 and 2.  NH MS1-MS3s are eligible to apply each spring of the academic year and must first meet with the NHCOE Student Development Coordinator.  To be eligible, you must be of Native Hawaiian ancestry and must also complete 5-10 hours of community service in NH communities.  Stipends range from $300 – $1,000 based on class level and are disbursed as a reimbursement directly to the student.

Travel Reimbursement for Research Presentations

This funding helps provide supplementary support to medical students who have been invited to present the results of their research efforts at a national conference within the US or Canada.  To ensure that many students can be supported through this fund, the maximum amount of funding available per student is $500 to cover:

  • Economy round trip airfare
  • Conference registration fee
  • Abstract submission fee

Only one student per project will be funded.  Requests must be submitted to OSA at least 30 days BEFORE the conference date.

Download the Student Travel Support for Research Presentation Request Form (accessible with your hawaii.edu email address) and submit the completed form along with the supporting documents to Sandy Liu at sandyliu@hawaii.edu.


Nomura Emergency Medicine Travel

This fund is available for 3rd and 4th year students interested in pursuing careers as Emergency Medicine physicians.  Funds may be used for costs for students to attend the national Society of Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) Annual Meeting and Residency Fair, residency interviews, and away rotations.  An email notification regarding the availability for the Nomura Emergency Medicine Travel Fund will be sent out by Sandy Liu.

  • Society of Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) Annual Meeting & Residency Fair:
    The SAEM Annual Meeting allows 3rd year medical students the opportunity to network with faculty and staff from various Emergency Medicine programs.  Funds may be used for conference registration fees, travel and lodging.  Please note this fund is in the form of a reimbursement.
  • Residency Interviews & Away Rotations:
    This fund will help offset travel expenses incurred during residency interviews and away rotations.  Funds may be used for airfare, lodging and transportation.
