How do I apply for financial aid?
To apply for financial aid, you need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online or through the myStudentAid Mobile App. The app is available through the Apple App Store and through Google Play. For more information, visit the Financial Aid page.
Why should I apply for financial aid?
Financial aid provides flexible financial resources to help you finance your medical school education. Without applying for financial aid, you won’t won’t know what funds you may be eligible for. It is also free to apply for financial aid and your financial aid information may be required when applying for scholarships.
What is the FAFSA?
The FAFSA is the federal application for financial aid used by most schools of higher education and around the country including JABSOM. To complete the FAFSA, visit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid website.
What is a FSA ID?
The FSA ID is your username and password to access and complete your FAFSA with and your personal identifier when logging into other U.S. Department of Education sites. To obtain your FSA ID, visit the Federal Student Aid website.
What is JABSOM's Federal School Code?
The federal school code for JABSOM is 01610 which is the same code for UH Manoa.
Does it cost anything to apply for financial aid?
No. The application is free and you can obtain assistance by calling the toll-free number 1-800-433-3243 or contact the JABSOM Scholarship Director & Financial Aid Counselor.

When should I apply for financial aid?
The new FAFSA is released every year on October 1st and our indicated priority deadline for submitting the FAFSA is February 1st. It is recommended to apply for financial aid as soon as it becomes available, but before the priority deadline. You must submit a FAFSA every year to receive financial aid.
It's past the priority deadline. Can I still apply for financial aid?
Yes, you can still apply for financial aid after the February 1st deadline, but your financial aid award may be limited to remaining available funds.
Do I need to include my parent's information when completing the FAFSA?
As a graduate student, you do not need to include your parent’s income information as you are considered an independent student for financial aid purposes. JABSOM does not utilize your parent’s income information to determine your financial aid award.
I am married. Do I need to include my spouse's information?
If you are married at the time you are completing the FAFSA, you must include your spouse’s information.
Can I get help with completing the FAFSA?
If you encounter difficulties when completing your FAFSA, you may call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at their toll-free number 1-800-433-3243. You may also contact the JABSOM Scholarship Director & Financial Aid Counselor with questions or to schedule an appointment to obtain assistance.

How do I get financial aid?
To receive financial aid, you need to apply by completing the FAFSA online every year. When your FAFSA information is received by the school, the Financial Aid Office will determine what funds you are eligible for. You will be notified by email to view your financial aid award through MyUH.
Where can I view my financial aid award?
You can view your financial aid award through your MyUH account. Select “View My Financial Aid Information” and then click on “My Award Information”.
Where can I view the status of my financial aid?
You can view your financial aid status through your MyUH account. Select “View My Financial Aid Information” and then click on “My Overall Financial Aid Status”.
I've completed my FAFSA, when can I expect my financial aid award?
Financial aid awards for the new academic year are posted in late March. Subsequent financial aid awards are determined approximately 3-4 weeks after your FAFSA information has been received. An email notification will be sent to your hawaii.edu email account when your financial aid award is ready to view.
Do I have to accept the financial aid award offered to me?
You may decline any or all of the financial aid awards offered to you. You may also request a reduced amount of the award offered by indicating the amount in the field provided. Please note that the amount indicated will be divided into two payments for each semester.
How do I get my financial aid to pay for my tuition and fees at JABSOM?
When you have accepted your financial aid award offer and completed all requirements, your financial aid funds will be sent directly to the school to pay toward your tuition and fees. Any leftover financial aid funds will then be refunded to you to use toward your education costs and living expenses for the semester.
How do I get monies from my financial aid to pay for my living expenses?
Once your financial aid is disbursed to your student account and your tuition and fees have been paid for the semester, any leftover financial aid will be refunded to you. Your financial aid refund is to be used for your education costs and living expenses.
If I receive a stipend to purchase Step exam study materials, will this impact my financial aid?
Yes, the stipend may have an impact on your financial aid. Study exam materials are included in your cost of attendance and will be counted as a resource/financial assistance. Students are recommended to contact the JABSOM Scholarship Director & Financial Aid Counselor to determine how the stipend will impact your financial aid award.
I am taking a leave of absence from JABSOM. How will this impact my financial aid?
Due to not being enrolled at JABSOM while on leave, you will be ineligible for financial aid. In addition, if you have prior federal student loans, you will enter into repayment after your 6-month grace period has passed. However, you will be able to reapply for financial aid and defer your student loan payments upon your return.

Prior to taking leave, please consult with the JABSOM Scholarship Director & Financial Aid Counselor.

How much is JABSOM's tuition?
For the current 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 academic year, the tuition is as follows:

Do we pay any student fees? If so, how much is it?
The student fees are $386 per semester or $772 per academic year.
Where can I see what my tuition charges are for the semester?
You can view your UH student account information through MyUH. Select “View My Student Account” from the home page.
When do I pay for my tuition?
Payment deadlines are announced before the start of each semester. You will be notified by the UH Manoa Cashier’s office via email or visit UH Manoa’s Payment page for more information.
What if I can't pay for tuition in full or by the deadline?
The University offers an Installment Payment Plan to students. For more information, visit the Tuition and Fees Installment Payment Plan page.
Where do I pay for my tuition?
You can make your tuition payment online through your MyUH portal or in person at any UH Campus Cashier’s Office.

If I have financial aid and/or scholarships, do I need to pay for my tuition by the deadline?
As a financial aid and/or scholarship recipient, your tuition payment is due at a later date than the normal tuition payment deadline. Refer to the UH Manoa’s Payment page for more information.
What forms of payment can I use to pay for my tuition?
The university accepts various forms of payments, including check or credit/debit card online through MyUH. For more information regarding payment options, please visit the Student Accounts page.

What steps do I take to ensure my VA benefits pay for tuition and fees?
Email the JABSOM Registrar stating you will be utilizing your VA benefits towards your tuition and fees and provide verification of your VA benefits.
What types of scholarships are available at JABSOM?
A variety of scholarships are available at JABSOM that are merit-based, need-based or both. To view scholarships by categories, view the Scholarships page.
Where can I find information about other scholarships?
You can view a list of external scholarships by visiting the Scholarships page. Please note that scholarship opportunities are announced via email so check your hawaii.edu email periodically.
How do I apply for scholarships?
Most scholarships applications are available online. Carefully review the requirements of the scholarship, as letters of recommendations may be required. It is strongly recommended that you submit your applications BEFORE the stated deadline.
When do I apply for scholarships?
The UH scholarship cycle begins sometime around November through March. Please note that some external scholarships may open later during the academic year. To view external scholarships and their deadlines, go to the list of external scholarships.
If I'm receiving financial aid, can I still apply for scholarships?
Yes, you may apply for scholarships as a financial aid recipient. It is important to note that the receipt of scholarships may impact your financial aid award, and any external scholarship awards or resources should be reported in writing or by email to the JABSOM Scholarship Director & Financial Aid Counselor.
If I received a scholarship, how do I apply it to my tuition?
Scholarship funds are automatically applied to your UH student account to pay towards your tuition and fees. You can view your student account to check if your scholarship has been received.
I received a check for a scholarship that is made payable to the University of Hawaii at Manoa and me. How can I apply it to my tuition & fees?
You will need to endorse the back of the check and either take the check or mail it to the UH Manoa Cashier’s Office. Make sure to retain a copy of the check or the check stub for your personal records. You can verify that the check has been applied by viewing your student account through MyUH.
I am receiving a scholarship through the Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program. How do I notify the school?
Inform the JABSOM Scholarship Director & Financial Aid Counselor in writing or by email and provide a copy of your award letter or a verification of benefits letter from your recruiter. The letter should indicate the following information:

  • The name of the scholarship
  • The amount or value of your education benefits
  • The period for which you will receive your education benefits
I am receiving a scholarship through the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) or through the Native Hawaiian Health Professions Scholarship program (NHHPSP). How do I notify the school?
Inform the JABSOM Scholarship Director & Financial Aid Counselor in writing or by email and provide a copy of your award letter indicating the name of the scholarship, the amount of the scholarship and the period for which you will receive your scholarship.
I am taking a leave of absence. How will this impact my scholarship(s)?
A leave of absence may have an impact on your scholarship, but it depends on the scholarship you are receiving. Some of the scholarship donors may need to be consulted regarding your situation. Contact the JABSOM Scholarship Director & Financial Aid Counselor prior to taking leave.
How do I apply for student loans?
To apply for federal student loans, you must first complete the FAFSA. When your FAFSA information is received by the school, your eligibility for federal student loans will be determined and will be offered through a financial aid award. For more information, visit the Federal Student Loans page.
What's the difference between the Unsubsidized loan and the Graduate PLUS loans?
The Unsubsidized loan is at a lower interest rate and assessed lower origination fees than the Graduate PLUS loan. Visit the Federal Student Loans page for more information about each loan.
I was offered federal student loans, but can I accept less than what was offered?
Yes, you may accept less than the amount offered. When accepting your financial aid award, indicate the amount you would like to borrow in the field provided. Please note that amount will be split in half between the Fall and Spring semesters.
Why is the loan amount that was disbursed to my student account different from the amount I had accepted on my financial aid award?
Loan fees are deducted from the amount accepted before it is applied to your UH student account.

Example: You accepted $20,000 of the Unsubsidized loan for the Fall semester and the loan fee is 1.059%. Before the loan is sent to the school, the loan fee (approximately $212) will be deducted from the amount you had accepted. The amount of $19,788 will be deposited into your student account for the semester.

When does interest on the loans start to accrue?
Interest begins to accrue on your loans at the time of disbursement.
If I apply for student loans, will I need to start making payments while I am in school?
No, you have the option to defer payments while in school at least half-time or greater. However, you can make payments toward your loan(s) at any time without any pre-payment penalties to reduce your overall loan debt.
I have prior student loans. Where can I submit my 'In-School Deferment Request Form' to have it completed and signed by a school official?
You can submit the form in-person or email it to the JABSOM Registrar.

Are there other student loans that I can apply for besides federal student loans?
JABSOM offers two types of loans to assist medical students: The Medical School Long-Term Loan and the Medical School Emergency Loan.

  • Medical School Long-Term Loan

    • Offered once every semester.
    • Maximum loan request is $1,500 a semester, not to exceed the aggregate maximum of $3,000.
    • Repayment begins 6 months after graduation or leaving JABSOM.
  • Medical School Emergency Loan

    • Available throughout the academic year.
    • This is a short-term loan which is repaid in full, 90-days after disbursement is received

Private Student Loans are available through various banks or private lenders. You will need to apply directly with the lender you select and your eligibility is subject to credit verification.

When do I begin repaying my student loans?
Loan repayment for the federal student loan programs begin 6-months after graduating or leaving JABSOM. To determine your exact dates of repayment, contact the Servicer of your loan(s).
Where do I make my loan repayments?
Loan repayments are made through your assigned loan servicer. To find out who your loan servicer is, view your student loan history on the Federal Student Aid site or call the Federal Student Aid Information Center (FSAIC) at 1-800-433-3243.
What is a loan servicer?
A loan servicer is a company assigned to you by the U.S. Department of Education to handle billing and other services regarding your federal student loan on their behalf. Their services are at no cost to you. They can assist with repayment options, deferments, loan consolidation and other tasks related to your federal student loans. Where can I find information about loan repayment?
There are several loan repayment options available. To view and compare the different loan repayment options, visit the Federal Student Aid website or go to AAMC FIRST to download the Education Debt Manager for Matriculating and Graduating Medical Students for free.
Is there a way to figure out what my anticipated monthly loan repayment amount will be?
The AAMC has a tool available called the MedLoans Organizer and Calculator (MLOC). You can upload your federal student loan history directly into the MedLoans Organizer and use the Calculator to determine your estimated monthly payment amount.
